Bitcoin RSI above 70: overheating, or a strong trend?
RSI reaches 75 and Bitcoin keeps rising. The indicator may be doing exactly what it should: recording strong recent momentum. The trouble starts when that observation becomes a guaranteed reversal.
RSI is not a probability
RSI measures recent upward versus downward momentum on a 0–100 scale. A 14-period setting and reference levels of 70 and 30 are common. Strong trends can keep the reading in an extreme region.
A reading of 70 is neither a 70% chance of a rise nor a 70% premium to fair value. The observation window and smoothing method also affect the result.
Read the levels alongside price
Around 50 can be a useful midpoint for momentum, but it is not a universal trading boundary. Above 70, ask whether the advance has accelerated and how far price has moved from its recent range.
Below 30, the same caution applies in reverse. A low reading during a selloff says little about whether selling has finished. Having fallen substantially does not prevent another decline.
The same 75 can tell two different stories
Consider two invented situations. In the first, price leaves a range and subsequent pullbacks retain an upward structure before RSI reaches 75. In the second, a sudden spike pushes RSI to 75, but the close returns inside the old range.
The first invites a question about persistence; the second, a question about whether the breakout held. These are reading examples, not measured success rates. The same number does not imply the same context.
Divergence warns; it does not schedule a reversal
A higher price high paired with a lower RSI high can suggest that momentum has not kept pace. It deserves attention, but does not identify a confirmed top or a deadline for a decline.
The selected highs, their spacing and the time frame matter. An unfinished candle can change the comparison. Selecting convenient peaks after the event can conceal the uncertainty that existed at the time.
Daily and weekly readings answer different questions
Choose the time frame first, then check the reading and observation date. Daily momentum can strengthen while the weekly picture remains weak. That is a difference of scale, not necessarily a contradiction.
On the dashboard, read the price structure and market context before using RSI to describe momentum. Keep execution decisions separate from the indicator’s description.
Concept references and examples
Prices, amounts and scenarios are invented teaching examples, not historical market observations, backtest results or return promises. These references support the concepts; they do not identify the supplier of this site’s market series or imply endorsement.
